Tough Cookie

Don't mess with this four-and-a-half-year-old... :) She's a lean machine on her bike these days, tearing down hills and grunting up them. Sitting is not for Kans; according to her, wagons are made to stand in. A rock wall is a balance beam (hence the scrape as seen above). A slide is something to power up. I love watching Anika's face as she takes on a challenge--fierce, determined, and joyful all at the same time.

"Mom, change it to BLAST so I can BLAST my face!" (Anika's request for a change from the "shower" mode on the hose.)

A first time for everything...

When you're only 13 months old, there are a lot of firsts to experience. First steps, first time for cake, a first bike (well, pre-trike, but it's still pretty cool), etc. Many firsts to come still, and we are enjoying each one alongside our little guy.

Eben's first birthday was June 18th. Some of our favorite "firsts" in the last year:
-Love at first sight: Anika meet her baby brother with a look of awe when she realized that this tiny little being was the baby who had been kicking her hand for so long. After a few tender moments, she looked at Ed and me and said in all sincerity, "I can give away 'Fox and the Hound'....and 'Peter Pan'. (Her favorite movies at the time). I don't want Eben to watch them and be scared." Big sis, the protector from the start.
-First buzz: We decided to relieve Ebbs from his natural Yoda hair pattern. I held him on my lap while Ed took the clippers to him. It was a little sad to feel the soft duckling-like hair drop and feel the coarse ends instead, but we've decided he looks quite handsome (and like his Daddy indeed) with his crew-cut.
-First time meeting Obi (our pup): Eben was absolutely thrilled, repeating his mantra, "DA!" and chasing the little guy everywhere. That is, until he spotted Anika's unfinished chocolate milk. Milk or puppy? He was torn, and both were eluding him!
-One of Eben's first steps: holding a ball in front of him, he decided to mix it up a little with a balance move in the company of dear friends, Lisa & Mairead. Do we see a future in yoga, Ebbs?

With a knick-knack, patty-whack, give your kid a bone. (One last first--pork ribs. He LOVED em!)
